Book a Private Tour
Explore Cleveland's rich history with a private tour of the Cozad–Bates House, the oldest pre-Civil War structure in University Circle. Built in 1853 for Justus Cozad by his father Andrew, the house was expanded in the 1860s and 1872. The Cozads, along with the Fords and other residents, were active in the Underground Railroad, aiding freedom seekers on their journey to Canada. While there's no evidence the house sheltered freedom seekers, the Cozads were known abolitionists.
In the early 1900s, the house became a boarding house and sat vacant by the end of the century. In 2006, University Hospitals donated it to University Circle Inc. for restoration. The same year, it was designated a Cleveland Landmark, thanks to the efforts of the Cleveland Restoration Society, Council Member Kevin Conwell, and Restore Cleveland Hope.
